A new via ferrata is due to open in May of 2022, just south of Rotary Park, but unlike the course that is opposite the Ice Park, the Gold Mountain Via is privately-owned. On November 12 and 13, Ouray High School’s Outdoor Education classes were allowed to preview the course, guided by Logan Tyler of Basecamp Ouray and outdoor ed teacher Jimmy Chiang.

The lights dim, the voices of hundreds of spectators fade, and the curtains open, revealing a Christmas village full of graceful ballerinas in their caroling dance.

The Ivalas Quartet from Boulder traveled to Ouray to perform at The Wright Opera House on Thursday December 9 and stopped by Ouray School for the afternoon. Middle and high school students were fortunate enough to spend some time with them and ask questions that sparked their interest after the quartet performed.

With winter comes winter sports, and what better way to spend those snowy days than gliding down a mountain with a couple of friends? Snow comes at the most unexpected times here in the San Juans. One thing that we have learned from living in Ouray is that once the snow starts falling, it just doesn't stop. But many students have been worried this year, when even in early December there has been little accumulation.

The French Club held an after-school FUNdraiser in the APAC for primary students on December 2 to raise funds for their spring trip to France. At the FUNdraiser, elementary school children participated in carnival games and activities and enjoyed themselves with the members of the French club.

It was a dark and cold early morning the first time I took Gypsy for a walk. She was taking her time as she had never had the chance to do that before, stopping at every patch of dead grass that peeked through the thin layer of snow.

With COVID cases spiking in our area our school has signed up with a state program to encourage students to get tested regularly. Parents sign their children up for a serial COVID test program.

Colorado's graduation requirements are changing, and all students who live in Colorado must now pass an approved standardized assessment in reading, writing, communicating, and mathematics to graduate.

Mr. Jimmy Chiang is now in charge of Ouray School's woodshop, a program that began in 1969 but has not been offered for many years. Ouray High School Honor Society sent out a survey asking for courses that the Ouray School used to have and wished to see offered again, and "woodshop came in second or third on the list of courses," explained Principal Tod Lokey.
