The Ouray High School class of 2023 graduates on May 28 at 1 pm in Fellin Park. Would you like to know their plans?

As the Ouray School calendar winds down, students have their summer plans foremost in mind. Traveling, working, sports, and hanging out are the sought-after activities that students are looking forward to.

Over three Thursdays in April and May, high school students read books with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders for a half hour per session. I was paired up with Calvin, a 3rd-grader whose book of choice was Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I learned a lot about Calvin, who likes to read and has an older brother.

Every high schooler was in agreement that it had been a long week. But it turns out that this kind of week provides unexpected delights. What I’m saying is that on Thursday, May 11, there was a snowball fight through the high school hallways.

The English teacher who gives extra credit for juggling, who teaches “grandma” instead of grammar, who jumps on tables in a gorilla costume each Halloween, who has a tie for every ridiculous occasion, and who changes lives, is leaving this year. Mr. John Kissingford, known to students as Mr. K, is retiring after 10 years of teaching at Ouray High School and 30 years in the profession.

Four Ouray High School Future Business Leaders of America competed at a state level April 5-7 at the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center in Aurora. There were three days worth of informational workshops, presentations, and competition, as well as fun activities around the resort including mini golf, basketball, tennis, and swimming.
