Schools and Communities

by Second Grade

Schools and communities! Those are the buzz words in second grade this quarter. Ms. Cervone and her students have been comparing and contrasting different schools and communities.

When you think about a school, what do you imagine? Odds are it’s not on a boat or in a tent. But there are schools like this!

Second grade has been reading a book called Off to Class: Incredible and Unusual Schools Around the World by Susan Hughes. “In this book, some schools are the same and some are very different,” said second grader Santiago.

“At another school, they might do something different, like go to a tent school,” explained Auga. “We also learned about a school in the Amazon rainforest,” remarked Brycen. “All of the schools are so different!” exclaimed Kelby.

A few weeks ago, the class even had a Google Meet with two home-schooled students (a second and a fourth grader) from New York.  “Some of it was the same learning, some of it was different learning,” said Leroy. “For example, they were learning more advanced things, such as history, biology, Spanish, piano, and so on.”

Second grade is currently making a video to share with parents at Presentations of Learning and younger students who may not know as much about what to expect at school. In the video, they share that important things we do at school include math, reading, how to make friends, how to be kind and nice, and science. “Did you know that moon phases affect waves?” Issak asked.

“I learned that earthquakes can cause schools to collapse,” said Leroy. As the students wrap up their study of schools around the world, they look forward to their next learning adventures. “I think what we’ve been learning is fun,” said Avry.
