SENIOR PROFILE: Katie Woodman

by Mica Hart

Katie Woodman is excited, she says, to be “challenged” and to “work with [her] creativity” in engineering next fall when she attends Colorado School of Mines.
This perfectly describes the values that many see in her. Science teacher Ms. Lakin has noticed Katie “becoming herself as an individual'' and commended her perseverance while working on physics.
Though she is a STEM-focused academic student, creativity and nature have a large effect on her life. She loves drawing while listening to music in order to wind down, but her favorite moments, where she is “most happy,” are when she is “with her closest friends” especially while playing outside.
Her face lights up as she recounts skiing with her friend in her hometown of Winter Park and “launching forward” off a jump much bigger than they anticipated into a fluffy cloud of powder and “somersaulting.”
Besides skiing, Katie also loves running. Cross Country “is one of [her] favorite things to do” and when asked to lay out her perfect day, one of her highlights would be going for a run. When she leaves Ouray, Katie will “definitely miss the mountains” and the ability to escape to them for a run in “five minutes.”
Katie’s parents, Jon and Sandi, have raised a deep thinking person who says that she strives, in life, to “keep smiling, be kind” and never let her “anger be taken out on other people.” She empathizes with others and isn’t quick judge them.
Katie believes that “the students at Mines have a bright future” and it is certain that she will fit in well there.
