New Students

Being at a small school means that every new student is extremely newsworthy. When three new students arrive, everybody wonders who they are, what they’re like, and what they think about our school. This year, we have three new students in the high school: Gerald Wilson, Calder Green, and Morgan Clark.

Freshman Gerald Wilson moved here from Ridgway school on November third. He is self-described as “chill, laid back,” and once you get to know him, he says, “I’m pretty cool.” Gerald likes to read, to draw, and to play sports, especially soccer.

Calder Green, a sophomore, moved from Des Moines, New Mexico at the beginning of this year. He described himself as a “fairly approachable” guy. Basketball is life for Calder, and he said that everyone should “come watch basketball season.”

Junior Morgan Clark arrived on October seventh from Ridgway school. Morgan loves to sing, to play volleyball or Dungeons and Dragons, and to drink coffee.

Ouray, they agreed, is very different from their old schools. Gerald said that “the curriculum is a little bit more advanced than Ridgway’s,” but that he’s adjusting well to the change. Compared to Calder’s old school, he said, there are fewer tests and better teachers in Ouray. Morgan’s love for Humanities is being fueled here: her schedule is “very art-based so I have jewelry, theater, uke, and all that,” which she said is “awesome.”

Socially, the three said Ouray School is great. “Everybody is really nice,” Morgan remarked, though “it’s definitely weird because most people here have known each other since kindergarten.” This is an idea shared by almost all new students, especially the ones that have moved to a smaller school. Gerald finds it refreshing that the school is smaller. “I feel like you get to know everybody, it’s much easier,” he said.
