New 3rd Grade Teacher: George Hunt

by Sakoya Jensen

This year, Ouray Elementary School welcomes a new third grade teacher, Mr. George Hunt. Elementary principal Kenneth Nelson said that “Mr. Hunt is relationship-focused and has a wonderful relationship with kids,” and that he is very knowledgeable with DIBELS, the OES literacy assessment program.

One good sign, Mr. Nelson said, was that Mr. Hunt told him how much he enjoys recess. Mr. Hunt said that he “wanted to play with” his students, as well as teach them.

Previously, Mr. Hunt taught kindergarten in Montrose, but since he lives in Ridgway, he was excited to find a job opening in Ouray. He said that “I always wanted to work in Ouray or Ridgway. It seemed like a challenge and I decided to go for it.”

Third graders think their new teacher is “cool,” said Colten, because he “only assigns homework on occasion.” Colten seemed to get along well with Mr. Hunt.

Mr. Hunt considers himself a relationship-focused, playful guy who enjoys his students. “I love watching them grow and learn new things,” he said. “It’s like the lightbulb that turns in their head; it reminds me of when I was younger and when I was learning something new.”
